From the moment you drive up to the Live Oak International, you will see them: The Live Oak volunteers.

Whether it’s directing you to the parking area, checking your ticket, driving the guest shuttles or just saying, “Hello,” the work they do makes the event go off smoothly.

The sense of volunteerism really took hold in the United States in the 1800s when people began taking an interest in those less fortunate. By the time the Civil War started, volunteers on both sides helped provide aid to soldiers. Those efforts led to the foundation of the American Red Cross, which after the war, dedicated itself to the helping in disaster relief that is still the focus of the group.

As the decades passed, most volunteer efforts focused mainly on helping the poor, including the Salvation Army and the Peace Corps.

Through the years, however, volunteering has evolved into offering services for any cause without the expectation of pay. Many people volunteer at school or church and give their skills to help the community in general.

Live Oak Volunteers: The Unsung Stars

Studies have shown that volunteering helps people improve their quality of life and well-being. Older adults, who volunteer, are among those who get the most benefit.

Whatever the reason for volunteering, the Live Oak volunteers are indispensable and are our ambassadors to those who come out to enjoy the show. Without their friendly personalities, Live Oak International would not be the family-friendly event it has become.

While it is customary to volunteer without expectation of pay, Live Oak International holds a volunteer-only party with dinner and drinks in their honor.

Help us make the 25th Anniversary of the Live Oak International from Feb. 25-28 a special one.

As always, proceeds from the event go to community organizations, including the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra and the Ocala Farm Ministry.

Without the invaluable help of our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to contribute as much as we have to local organizations.
